About Afriscom Institute

The African Institute of Strategic Communication, Journalism and Media Research, also known as “The Afriscom Institute” caters for both strategic and mediated communication needs.

Our Mandate

The Afriscom Institute’s mandate is to advance excellence in African-led research, training, and practice in strategic communication, journalism, and media studies. The Institute will act as a centre for rigorous inquiry, professional capacity building, and knowledge translation that enhances ethical media practice, informed public discourse, and evidence-based policy engagement. Through interdisciplinary research, education, partnerships, and public engagement, the Institute will address Africa’s evolving information, technological, and socio-political challenges while promoting accountability, innovation, and inclusive development across the continent.

Integrity and ethical practice

Excellence in research and intellectual rigour

African leadership and voice

Innovation, creativity, adaptability and agility

Collaboration and partnership

The Afriscom Institute is hosted by Daystar University that has long been recognised for its communication programme, thanks to its range of specialised courses, its alumni dotted across the globe, industry linkages, and the course functionality. It was the first programme established at the university and, for many years, was reflected in the university's name. The university offered its first certificate, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in this discipline. UNESCO’s recognition further placed the university's training on the continental map. It remains the university’s strongest area, even as other disciplines emerge in DU’s course menu, prompting the question of how to continue excelling in strategic communication, journalism and the media domain.
